Chapter 100 Chains of Power, Part I

Chapter 100 Chains of Power, Part I

The tension in the room thickened like an oppressive fog. Daena and Nyssara exchanged a brief glance unspoken agreement flashing between them. They would get answers, one way or another.

The Dark Sovereign tilted her head, her fiery hair cascading over one shoulder. "You've come all this way for Liria, yet you stand before me demanding without offering tribute? How quaint." She flicked her wrist lazily, and the chains that coiled around her throne rattled, their infernal glow intensifying. "Very well, queens. Shall I show you why I am sovereign?"

Daena unsheathed her curved blade in one smooth motion, the steel igniting with black flames. "You can show me whatever you want, Sovereign. I'm not here to bow."

Nyssara's lilac eyes gleamed, her silver horns beginning to glow faintly as she summoned the stars' energy. "We'll take our answers... after we've broken you."

The Sovereign's lips curled into a predatory smile. "Adorable."

And then the room erupted.

The Sovereign moved first, her chains exploding outward with terrifying speed. Daena barely had time to leap to the side, the ground where she stood seconds earlier shattering into a crater. Nyssara spun gracefully, her hands weaving intricate patterns as she summoned a barrage of shimmering starfire bolts that rained down on the Sovereign.

With a flick of her fingers, the Sovereign summoned a barrier of molten gold, absorbing the assault effortlessly. "You'll have to do better than that, Nyssara," she mocked, stepping forward as though the chains binding her were nonexistent. "Don't tell me centuries of ruling have dulled your bite?"

Daena snarled and lunged, her flaming blade a blur as she aimed for the Sovereign's neck. The Sovereign sidestepped with unnerving ease, catching Daena's wrist mid-swing. The Sovereign's grip burned like acid, and Daena hissed in pain.

"Such a shame," the Sovereign murmured, her golden eyes boring into Daena's. "You were always my favorite, Daena. So much potential, wasted on sentiment."

Nyssara's voice rang out sharply. "Let her go!" With a powerful gesture, she conjured a massive spear of concentrated starlight and hurled it at the Sovereign. The weapon tore through the air, its brilliance illuminating the chamber.

The Sovereign released Daena and raised a hand, catching the spear inches before it struck her chest. The force of it drove her back a step, her heels skidding against the stone. Her smile widened as the spear dissolved in her grip. "Now that's more like it."

Daena didn't hesitate. As soon as the Sovereign released her, she spun low, aiming a vicious slash at the Sovereign's legs. The blade connected, but instead of cutting through flesh, it sparked against scales as red as molten lava.

The Sovereign laughed, her voice echoing like thunder. "Did you think I'd make it easy for you?" She retaliated, her chains lashing out in every direction, forcing both queens to retreat.

Nyssara leapt onto the shattered remains of a pillar, her hands glowing with power. "Daena, flank her!"

Daena didn't need to be told twice. She surged forward, her blade slashing in an arc of black fire. At the same time, Nyssara released a pulse of star energy that bathed the chamber in light. The combined assault forced the Sovereign to go on the defensive, her chains forming a writhing barrier around her.

But even as she deflected their attacks, she looked... amused.

"Do you really think this is enough?" The Sovereign's voice was low, dangerous. With a burst of energy, her chains shot outward, wrapping around Daena's blade and yanking it from her grip. She spun and slammed a fist into Nyssara's starlit shield, cracking it like glass.

Daena snarled, summoning her flames directly into her hands. "I'm just getting started!" She charged again, her fists blazing as she delivered a flurry of strikes. The Sovereign blocked each one with infuriating ease, her chains moving as though alive, coiling and striking in perfect harmony with her movements.

Nyssara, now free from the immediate assault, took a deep breath and raised her arms. The faint hum of the stars filled the chamber as she began drawing in celestial energy. "Daena, keep her busy!"

"Easier said than done!" Daena shouted, narrowly dodging a chain aimed at her throat. She retaliated with a blast of darkfire, forcing the Sovereign to dodge.

The Sovereign's laughter rang out again. "You amuse me, queens. Truly. But let me show you the difference between power and true power."

The chains erupted into a storm, the room trembling under the Sovereign's might. Daena and Nyssara were forced to regroup, standing side by side as the Sovereign loomed before them, her golden eyes burning brighter than ever.

"You wanted a fight?" she said, her voice dripping with malice. "Then fight me."

The Sovereign thrust her hands forward, and the chains whipped outward, not merely as weapons but now burning with molten flames that licked the air with deadly intent. Each link was alive, twisting and writhing like serpents, making it impossible to predict their path.

Daena roared, meeting the onslaught head-on. She thrust her palm forward, unleashing a torrent of black fire that collided with the chains in a burst of explosive heat. Sparks flew, the clash filling the chamber with deafening noise. "Nyssara, do something!"

Nyssara didn't need the reminder. She leapt high, summoning constellations in midair with swift, deliberate gestures. "Astral Cascade!" she shouted, her voice commanding. A torrent of starry light rained down from above, the shimmering bolts exploding on impact as they targeted the Sovereign directly.

The Sovereign smirked, her hands snapping upward. The chains surrounding her spiraled into a protective dome, absorbing the starlight. The room shook violently as explosions rippled outward, sending debris flying.

Daena, undeterred, dove into the fray. Her fists blazed with raw darkfire as she aimed a flurry of punches at the Sovereign's defenses. Each strike left trails of flame, searing against the chains and forcing the Sovereign to shift her attention.

"Is this your best?" the Sovereign sneered, her voice calm despite the intensity of the battle. With a flick of her wrist, a chain snapped forward, coiling around Daena's ankle. Before she could react, it yanked her off her feet and flung her across the chamber like a ragdoll.

Daena twisted midair, landing in a crouch with an audible growl. "You're really asking for it now," she spat, summoning a massive surge of energy to her hands. "Eclipse Rend!"

A curved wave of darkfire erupted from her palms, cutting through the air with lethal precision. The Sovereign dodged at the last second, the attack grazing her side and leaving a gash that oozed molten gold.

For the first time, her smirk faltered. "So, you can bleed me," she muttered, her tone almost admiring. "Impressive."

"Not as impressive as how much you're about to regret underestimating us," Nyssara shot back. She landed gracefully beside Daena, her hands glowing brighter than ever as a cluster of star-shaped glyphs orbited her. "Supernova Surge!"

The glyphs coalesced into a single, blinding point of light before erupting into a wave of destructive force. The Sovereign gritted her teeth, her chains lashing outward to counter the oncoming explosion. The two forces collided in a brilliant display of raw power, illuminating the chamber in blinding light.

When the smoke cleared, the Sovereign stood amidst the destruction, her armor of scales cracked but unbroken. She flexed her hands, her grin returning as though she thrived on the chaos. "You're better than I thought," she admitted, voice tinged with amusement. "But still not enough."

The chains surrounding her glowed with a deeper intensity, their movement becoming faster, more fluid, and more unpredictable. She stepped forward, her presence more imposing than ever. "Let me show you why I'm called Sovereign."
