Chapter 151 Bottomless pit

Chapter 151 Bottomless pit

Although Rocky knew his actions were completely out of place and the rest of the group, especially Amy, would get mad at him, he was too tempted to kill the monster rank cryptid.

It wasn't just that monster rank flux orbs were more expensive, but he also knew that killing cryptids could potentially increase a hunter's flux capacity and he was close to the heavenly rank, so close he could almost grasp it.

The serpent had the terrain advantage and gained a lot of distance, but it was also losing a lot of blood and its speed was decreasing. It seemed as though it would eventually drop dead at any given time which only added fuel to Rocky's desperate race.

Just when Rocky thought he was almost within his reach that the cryptid seemingly disappeared into the ground and Rocky stopped right in front of a black pit.

"Crap!" He said trying to gather his breath, though Uriel didn't share his frustration as he saw exactly what he had been looking for.

Although it seemed like a regular hole in the ground, something was different about it. Its entrance was surrounded with rocks portraying ancient glyphs, the same kind he was already familiar with. This confirmed Uriel he made the right choice by tagging along with this party, but he also questioned himself whether the cryptid leading them there was a coincidence or not.

"I can't let it get away, not when I'm so close to reaching the heavenly rank." Said Rocky with bloodshot eyes as he tied a rope to a nearby tree.

"Don't do it, let's wait for the rest. Amy said..." Uriel tried to warn him, he even attempted to block his way but Rocky pushed him to the side.

"Just tell them I'll be back in five minutes." Was all he said before disappearing into the dark pit.

The rest of the party showed up just in time to see the maddened young hunter jump into the ground with a rope tied around his waist.

"I tried to stop him, I truly did, but he wasn't listening." Uriel defended himself thinking that maybe they'll try to pin the blame of what happened on him. Thankfully for Uriel, they also saw his attempt to stop him and how Rocky pushed him aside.

Amy was visibly upset, she took a small book from underneath her armor and started anxiously turning the pages while mumbling to herself. Everyone in the team gazed at her with expectant eyes, but she shook her head dejectedly. The answers she was looking for weren't inside the book.

"Let's pull the rope." Amy ordered, tough her voice wasn't nearly as confident as it used to be. Still, they followed her command and attempted to pull Rocky out of the hole using the rope, only to find out the rope was loose.

"It's useless, he's not tethered anymore." The driver said.

"This is exactly why I didn't want to come here. Geez! He's always so reckless." Amy said stomping her feet on the ground, her teary eyes made it look more like a tantrum than an expression of anger. "I guess there's no choice, we'll have to follow that idiot."

"Are you for real? It looks dangerous." The driver was taken aback by Amy's recklessness.

"We can't leave anyone behind. Even if it's just a selfish idiot like Rocky."

"I don't think it's a good idea." Uriel, who had kept himself busy reading the carvings on the outside of the hole in the ground, said somberly.

"We simply can't abandon one of our friends. I know you must be scared because you're only a first year student but..."

"It's not that. The carvings on the outside, they seem to be a warning."

"What? You can read that? I thought it was just decorations." The driver was visibly surprised. "Don't tell me, you're a linguist!?"

"We don't have time for chitchat, just tell us what it says." Amy hurriedly said before Uriel had the time to reply.

"One day, before day and night existed, the Great spirit wandered the void and collected swirls of dust from the four corners of the nothingness in order to create the Comanche people. These people had the strength and power of the mighty storms. They were formed from the earth and the earth was one with them.

They were beautiful and powerful, with faces like moons and eyes capable of piercing the void.

But the Great spirit made a mistake, for as vast as his wisdom his passion for creation was even larger, and he created a shapeshifting demon out of the shadows of the void.

The shapeshifting demon wore the faces of the people and began tormenting them, and the Great spirit was displeased by this and cast it into the depths of a bottomless pit.

To seek revenge, the demon took refuge in the fangs and stingers of all the poisonous creatures and will forever harm people every chance it gets." Uriel only noticed the fearful expressions his companions were making, even Amy seemed scared out of her wits.

"A shapeshifting demon..." Amy said, her eyes wide as dish plates and her hands were shaking. Enjoy new tales from empire

"Don't worry, I heard a group of ascended killed one of those things during their first independent incursion." The driver said, though his voice was shaky revealing his true feelings.

"Don't you know who killed it!? You can't possibly compare us to them! Even if it was their first time they had The lightbringer, Medusa and Moonlight with them." Amy scolded her fellow ascended with a frown and everyone gasped in surprise at the mention of Uriel's friends.

The local government had made a huge deal out of the defeat of the first skinwalker. It was the first time an entity rank cryptid fell at the hands of ascended hunters and it served to boost the citizen's morale.

"Are you serious? Maybe the leader of their party was a heavenly rank and the government is just exaggerating like always." The driver wasn't yet convinced.

"That's not true. I know who their party leader was, but I can't disclose that information without her permission." Amy now seemed absolutely distraught. "I don't know if what Sage says is the truth, but even if there's only a small chance of one of those things appearing..."

"I know, it would be our end." The driver looked sad at the thought of abandoning Rocky too.

Uriel didn't participate in their sadness, nor did he feel any particular emotion towards Rocky. In fact, he felt a bit annoyed by his unbased confidence and stupid actions. Even so, he still wanted to investigate the pit, he couldn't say exactly why, but he felt drawn towards it and, despite knowing how dangerous it may be, he still wanted to go in.

"I'm not saying it's a bad idea to go in, it's just that we need a plan." Uriel addressed a confident smile to the party leader Amy.
