Chapter 78 : Ghosted
Chapter 78 : Ghosted
Medusa stared blankly at the roof on her apartment while lying comfortably on her leather sofa. The huge holographic TV was on but she wasn't paying any attention to it. She had been feeling down ever since she recovered from the injuries received during the incursion and from the surgery performed on her by Luna.
Although she had felt a bit depressed by Atomic's death, the reason why she was brooding now was different. It was because her cellphone had been awfully quiet ever since she got better. The only messages she had received had been from Sam asking her out, but the one who she wanted to reach out to her had completely disappeared.
She even tried calling Luna but she wouldn't even reply her texts, let alone pick up the phone.
"Is this what they call being ghosted?" She sighed and sent Luna yet another message without much hopes of even getting a reply from her friend. Ever since Uriel disappeared without saying a word It had become a habit for her to message Luna whenever she was feeling down.
Medusa: Where did I go wrong? I became close to him, invited him on a picnic and I've been flirtatious too! Is he so dense he doesn't notice my feelings?
Moonlight: He's not dense, he's just not into you. Stop bothering me.
Medusa: Luna!? Why have you been avoiding my calls? Do you know anything about Uriel?
Medusa jumped from the couch in joy after receiving Luna's reply. Even if Luna was cold as a brick of ice, she still replied.
Moonlight: I don't want to speak about him, he's a jerk.
It was at that moment Luna knew she screwed up. Insulting Uriel in front of Medusa, even through text messages, was like asking for a beating. Anyhow, those were Luna's true feelings and she could do nothing against them.
After coming back from the incursion Luna worked hard to draw attention from the Mapple corp. and they replied showing interest in her project. Everything was going perfect, until she suddenly stopped receiving any replies from them.
"Is this what being ghosted feels like?" Luna sighed.
Last thing she knew about Uriel was that he was now working with the Mapple corp. but, no matter how many times she tried to contact him, he wouldn't reply nor return her calls. The only one who remained in touch with her was Sam, but that was only because he wanted to ask her sister out.
More and more notifications popped up on Luna's cellphone as Medusa showered her with both questions and insults alike.
Moonlight: Did I do something wrong? Why would Uriel ignore my calls after landing a job at the Mapple corp?
Lightbringer: Maybe it's because when he tried to contact you after the incursion you told him to not bother you anymore. You always say stuff like that to me!
Moonlight: No, that's not it. Even if it was, Is putting a good word for me at the Mapple corp. too much to ask?
Luna, did remember sending a message like that to Uriel but she simply couldn't understand the reason why would that be related in any way to him ignoring her. After all, she told him she was busy, and Uriel more than anybody else would have definitely understood that research always comes first.
Besides, creating a bestiary could potentially give humanity an edge against cryptids and turn the tides of war, her project was that important.
Lightbringer: I don't know, Is asking for your sister's nudes too much?
Lightbringer: Sorry, it was the autocorrect... I meant number... I want your sister's nudes.
Lightbringer: Autocorrect again, I want Cassandra's nudes. Nudes, nudes, nudes.
Sam hurriedly tapped on the screen of his cellphone trying to repair his mistake, making it worse and worse by the second instead.
"I'm dead... If she shows this text to her sister I'm dead." Sam muttered, flushed in embarrassment and sweating cold in fear at the same time. "How come that loser got himself a girlfriend, not just that but Tina Celes herself, and I can't get girls to give me the time of day." Sam sighed.
Ever since Sam came back from the incursion he enjoyed a great deal of attention in the cryptid hunting agency. He tried to ride the popularity wave and boasted about his made up contributions causing him to be the center of attention wherever he went. Girls would ask him out on dates, women would hit on him and men wanted to become friends with him.
Everything would have been perfect if not for a single detail, he was deeply traumatized by the events that transpired during the incursion. Due to his trait, he saw what no human should. He witnessed first hand the horrors that lurked in the shadows of the lost city and he also knew the true appearance of the Slenderman.
Even if Sam wanted to go out on dates with those girls, he knew the only reason they were interested on him because they wanted him to join their hunting parties.
Truth be told, Sam wanted no part in any activity that involved any kind of violence. He was also very dissatisfied with his trait. When they told him he was an ascended he was so happy because it meant he was stronger than most of his classmates, never did it cross his mind a trait like his' could have such a drawback.
"Ahhhh! I'm an idiot!" He disheveled his hair in frustration. "I shouldn't have bragged so much, as soon as they find out I didn't do much they'll lose interest. How did Uriel fight against the skinwalker? He's just an evolved but he didn't look scared in the slightest." He pondered out loud.
Even though he always made comments about Uriel being 'just an evolved' it wasn't in a deprecating way, on the contrary, it only made Uriel's courage even more impressing.
As soon as he came back from the incursion Samuel Song, Sam's father, summoned him. He was a strict government agent that placed responsibility above all else, even family. Sam had no choice but to obey his father and go back to the family mansion for a couple days before having the chance to even say goodbye to Uriel.
"He definitely ghosted me. I bet he thinks I'm ignoring him because I didn't tell him I was leaving for a while." Sam smiled wryly after arriving at that conclusion.
Sam wasn't just lonely, he was running out of options. Despite being more popular than ever, all fame brought him were misfortunes. People were only interested on him to recruit them to their hunting parties and constantly pestered them about it, worse of all, his classmates were now jealous of him and they gave him the cold shoulder.
If only Uriel replied my messages, I bet he'll know what to do in my shoes. Just when he was about to lose all hope, Medusa finally sent him a message.
Medusa: Meet me at the library, bring Luna.
Sam's face brightened on the spot and he hurried to message Luna. For someone like Sam, getting Luna to come was an easy feat, all it took was to blatantly lie and she would come.
