Chapter 159 Smoke in the water
Chapter 159 Smoke in the water
"Ha ha! Hahaha, haha!" An hysterical laugh erupted in the open forest as Rocky remained unscathed after being hit in the face by Uriel. "Is that all you can..." His words were cut short by a burning sensation and the taste of iron in his mouth.
Uriel never faced a heavenly rank hunter in a fair fight before and he wasn't planning on starting now. While the punch carried all of his might, it wasn't nearly enough to harm a heavenly rank hunter like Rocky and he knew it. Fortunately, he also took his Magnum revolver from his trait and shot him point blank in the abdomen for good measure.
"Leave him alone and I might let you leave." Uriel said with a voice that sent shivers down Rocky's spine.
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm not speaking to you dumbass. I'm talking to the thing inside you."
"You're insane!" Rocky shouted as he tried to push Uriel away, but thanks to his enhanced speed stat he was able to dodge in time. He also vanished the revolver from his left hand and made it appear on his other, pressing it hard against Rocky's head.
Under the threat of death, the cryptid hiding beneath the hunter's skin realized he had no choice but to step forward. Rocky's yellow eyes reflected the bright light coming from the flare on the ground and his face contorted into a devious grimace as a black smoke arose from his wound healing the wound in a matter of seconds.
[System] Kill the entity before sunrise.
"You're an eclipse, aren't you?"
"How?" Rocky's distorted voice came from nowhere as his mouth didn't move. But the new heavenly rank hunter didn't want to talk anymore. Multiple rock spikes erupted from Rocky's body giving Uriel no time to retreat causing him to be impaled on arms, legs and even on his chest.
"At first..." Uriel coughed up some blood after the grievous wounds he received, but despite the seething pain he continued speaking. "At first I thought you were a skinwalker. The glyphs warned of a shapeshifting demon that wore the skin of its victims... it made sense..."
Annoyed by the stubbornness displayed by Uriel who wouldn't shut up even after receiving such injuries, Rocky took some distance and sent a barrage of stones flying towards him. Every single one of them hitting with the force of a heavenly rank fist, but he was far from done. He kept throwing stones until Uriel's body was buried beneath them.
A smirk was drawn on Rocky's face who turned his back to the pile of stones painted in red. He was now free to kill the remaining hunters from Amy's party. He had won, he would now be able to go back and claim all the loot for himself.
"I'm sorry... I tried my best to protect them, but we were swarmed by beasts." Rocky said in mock sadness, but his attitude shifted back into madness. "Yes, I'll go with that. Who cares about the Lightbringer, who cares about those shitty ascended. They'll proclaim me a hero and I'll get all the attention I deserve!"
As soon as his monologue ended a bright cyan light came from behind him and before he could react, he was hit right in the face by a clenched fist surrounded with blue sparks of flux energy, only this time, the heavenly rank hunter was sent flying at a distance.
"Nice trick!" Rocky said as he wiped a streak of blood that disappeared into black smoke. "I'll do you one better!"
Rocky repeated his actions and sent a barrage of stones towards Uriel. Instead of running away, Uriel closed the gap in an instant without even attempting to dodge the projectiles sent his way and both hunters entangled on a fistfight.
Although Rocky was better trained in combat than Uriel, the archaeology student was no inferior to him in power. They exchanged fists with ravaging fury splashing water and rocks all over the place, steam and smoke dancing together in a fierce whirlwind that shook the nearby trees.
It was a fated encounter between light and darkness, one that started long before either hunter was born and threatened to last even longer, but under the heavy rain, Water warlock's blessing was absolute.
With every blow Uriel dealt, he was able to take a step further giving his opponent no time to regenerate, no time to even breathe.
"Stop! You can't kill me without killing the kid!" The mouthless shapeshifting creature hidden within Rocky's skin warned, but instead of stopping, Uriel doubled his efforts. "Stop, I said stop it! He will die!"
"Like I care. You're a parasite and he's no better." Uriel replied, his eyes still brimming with power.
Although it seemed like Uriel had the complete advantage over his opponent, he was actually on his last leg. He was already running low on flux and suffering from the side effects of using it too recklessly. Everything hurt, he was dizzy and he could feel an immense pressure building up inside his body, making him feel like a water balloon filled with too much water, but he wouldn't stop.
It didn't matter to him how his knuckles cracked over and over, how he was being pierced by sharp rock spikes time and time again, he didn't stop throwing punches. But the stronger the flame, the faster it burns. Just like that, the light of his eyes started fading, his breathing became jagged and he took a step back.

A cloud of smoke wrapped Rocky's body entirely, healing his broken bones and wounds alike with a sizzling sound. His disjointed articulations twisted in awkward angles snapped back in place.
"I don't know how to kill this thing." both hunter and cryptid thought at the same time but, contrary to the eclipse that was still trying to compose itself, Uriel was still standing.
Right there, in the middle of nowhere, in the vast forest near Hunter's lane a gunshot broke the song of the rainfall.
